Conference PV&E´18

Crime prevention aims at reducing and deterring crime. It concerns various actors and fields of work, ranging from domestic violence against women and children to youth violence or violence in sports.

During the years, terrorism and extremist violence have particularly been on the rise in Western Countries as well as in the Middle East - Central Asia and (North) Africa. Extremist groups justify violence by exploiting development problems like inequality, poverty, poor governance and gender constructions. Extremist violent acts exacerbate existing conflicts, fragility and polarization and destabilize social and state structures.

Many states are facing the real threat that violent extremism will destroy (development) progress achieved. On the one hand, states have reacted with hard security measures. On the other hand radicalization and violent extremism remains a great challenge to societies by itself. Therefore,  different countries  implement and expand prevention programmes which handle with family problems, lack of perspectives, uprooting etc.

However, our understanding of the root causes of radicalization and the effects of measures to prevent violent extremism remains limited. What could be promising approaches to prevent violent extremism? What kind of measures should be avoided? Who should we work with and how? How can the impact of our activities be measured?

The International Conference of the Prevention of Violence and Extremism aims at facilitating the active exchange between practitioners, researchers and policy makers in the fields of crime prevention and prevention of violent extremism (PVE). It seeks to provide a forum for good practices and assist in establishing national and international networks. Participants are invited to present and discuss innovative and successful approaches, methods and findings and to foster their competences regarding the prevention of crime and violent extremism.

The conference takes place on November 8.-9., 2018 at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (Dag-Hammarskjöld-Weg 1, 65760 Eschborn, Germany)
